Appearance
The breed stands 24 to 28 inches at the withers (60 to 71 cm). Females weigh
anywhere from 70-100 pounds (30-45kg). Males are 75-130 pounds (35-60kg). In
Japan, Akitas come in only four colours: Red Fawn, Sesame (red fawn hairs with
black tips), Brindle, and White. All except white must have whitish hair on the sides of
the muzzle, on the cheeks, the neck, chest, body and tail.
Temperament
The Akita is active, independent, dignified, bold, but still easygoing. It will protect
family children, but may be apprehensive of other children. They may be aggressive
towards other small animals. The Akita is a dominant dog, expecting other dogs to
be submissive and male Akitas may be particularly aggressive around other males.
They should never be allowed to run off their leads around other animals.
History
The Akita dates back over three hundred years and takes its name from the
prefecture of Akita in northern Japan. Developed in 1630 by Samurai, encouraging
dog fighting to retain their aggressive edge without offending the shogunate, the
Akita was produced to be an excellent fighter and guardian. The Japanese
government has designated the Akita as a National Monument and one of Japan's
national treasures.

In the anime Kino's Journey, the character
Riku appears to be an Akita.
